Blackburn & District Society of Magicians

Our 2024 AGM, held in the comfort of Kingsway, was a smooth and efficient affair which produced no controversial issues.

Officers delivered their reports as we looked back over the past twelve months and predicted the future.  Financially, the League is in a secure position, regardless of a drop in membership, and so the subscription rate remains unchanged, with £1 being added to the price of a printed MeMeL to reflect the rise in postal costs.

We reflected upon quite a momentous year, in which we had moved our HQ, sold our library, done three shows and bought a new flexible stage to replace our old one.

Carl Pearson handed over the Presidential Chain of Office to Paul Guy after two successful years in the post, and both spoke briefly but sincerely.  Paul also received the President’s Award for contributions above and beyond the call of duty.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Members were unanimous in supporting the proposal that Derrick Smith should be made an Honorary Member, and your scribe was surprised but delighted to receive the new-look Les Brooks Award for contributions to the MeMeL. It is rewarding to reflect that the magazine now has more than 50 readers and attracts many contributions from outside the membership.

No magic meeting would be complete without a bit of magic, so Roger performed a card trick with a twist ending, Paul reprised a phonetically-based routine (Flash Card Opener) from last month’s party, Donald introduced us again to Magic Bunny and I read some entries from Kennedy’s light-hearted Dictionary for Magicians as well as showing a new ‘sucker’ Wessex Die Box, invented by Bill Stickland and made by Dave Baxter of Made to Measure Magic.
