The Modern Mystic League
AUGUST 2024
Blackburn & District Society of Magicians
On a glorious summer’s day, we welcomed around forty members of the church for an afternoon of close-up magic, joined by some of the residents from Kingsway and our very own Ron and Betty Baron, brought along by son Jonathan.
As I was here, there and everywhere I can’t describe all of the acts in their entirety, but I caught Brian Berry with some nifty work using coloured poker chips and his cups and (many) balls. Roger Woods had his trade-mark card trick along with the classic chop cup, and Paul Guy opened by producing a glass of water from an empty bag and concluded by changing the water into wine.
In the second half of the afternoon, Allan Clarke was joined by Martin Seed, the latter combining clever card work with the close-up, miniature linking rings. Allan’s patter was based upon the signs of the Zodiac and ESP symbols . . . and a piece of rope got in there somewhere.
Richard Blackie’s speciality is mental magic, employing a particularly baffling book test, and Donald (the Average) Monk worked his usual wonders, with his ‘how to get into the MML HQ’ puzzle, the Magic Bunny prediction book (with all his own original artwork) and his knife-through-spoon which tums out to be a fork! Great stuff.
SUMMER MAGIC @ WOODLANDS
Open Meeting
I provided the links where necessary, with the usual barrage of sight gags and the help of Baskerville the talking hound.
Refreshments were in the multi-talented hands of Allan Clarke, who produced some home-made cake to go with the tea and biscuits.
It was a very varied afternoon, showcasing all aspects of magic at close quarters, and our guests showed their appreciation by their generous purchasing of raffle tickets.
We are building up an excellent relationship with the church members, who will no doubt continue to support us in the future.
