The Modern Mystic League
DECEMBER 2024
Blackburn & District Society of Magicians
There was a definite ‘feel good factor’ in evidence at our Christmas party, as we welcomed children from the church, along with their families and friends, for an afternoon of music, magic and mince pies.
I opened with a few groan-worthy sight gags before introducing President Paul. His Old English Sheep Dog located a juicy bone, he performed an unusual version of Six Card Repeat using his DIY magic box from childhood, and included a letter game in which two competing teams had to create simple words from a number of letters, based upon clues. Paul ended with his animated drawing of Thomas the Tank Engine and restored torn paper, which produced a suitably festive greeting. It was all great fun and hugely enjoyed.
To conclude the first half, Marmalade the Monkey got up to his usual antics while trying to blow up a balloon, and eventually got carried away.
During the interval, Roger and Joan performed their Vanishing Mince Pies illusion to great success, and there was a grand raffle with hosts of good-quality prizes, including several magic boxes, individual tricks, selection boxes and bottles for the adults.
MAGIC @ WOODLANDS
CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY
Part two consisted of our special guest from Blackpool (soon to return as a member), Paul Joyce. He opened with a bang as his clapometer exploded, then went on to have fun with a huge magic wand and spring snakes which seemed to come from everywhere to the delight of the participants. A wizard turned up, there was plenty of colour-changing and Lovey Duck was rescued from the cat in time-honoured fashion. Also involved was a nest of present boxes, a spotty bag which eventually revealed Spot the Dog and the ‘so old it’s new’ cod vanish of a tumbler from a tray. It was fast paced and fun.
The party ended, of course, with the arrival of Santa, this time brought along by Frank and his wife Margaret, who enjoyed the celebrations as much as anyone else.
Our party is always a wonderful way to end the MML year, and much credit must go to the (very) small band of dedicated people who do so much work to bring it about . . . as if by magic!
