Blackburn & District Society of Magicians

President Paul presented another splendid President’s Day, with special guest Steve Gore – the Happiest Magician on the Planet.

Steve opened with his trademark medley of rope and silk effects, leading into the classic linking rings.

He then greeted an audience volunteer with a hug rather than the potential slap, and found her vanished banknote in a large red balloon.

Pom-pom sticks came next, with more silks from boxes and the prediction of a three-part image using a large yellow Lego head.

Young Martha then came up for the first of several appearances during the afternoon, and there was the squared-circle production of increasingly large Teddy bears.

A husband-and-wife pair followed Martha for a card effect, then our own Paul and Roger assisted with a Rubik’s Cube routine which was having its first outing.

There was a needle (or light-sabre) through balloon effect using the Star Wars theme, then Leon Guy helped out with an effect involving a shoelace threaded through a pack of cards.

COMMUNITY MAGIC SHOW
With Guest Star STEVE GORE
The Harry Potter theme music heralded a magic feather and a well-routined floating/dancing table (again with the assistance of Martha) and the climax of a snow storm (or confetti) from fan.

A simple list of tricks, of course, cannot convey the entertainment value of Steve’s performance – but the variety is obvious, and there were many thoughtful and imaginative twists to known effects, along with the appropriate use of background music. For the duration of Steve’s act, we were the Happiest Audience on the Planet.

The second half of the afternoon featured the usual suspects, but all new to our guests from the Woodlands Church community.  Carl and Richard baffled with mental magic, putting into practice several routines featured at our Workshops. Brian B, of course, wouldn’t go anywhere without his ‘popper’ beads and set of silver cups, and nor would Roger without his deck of cards.  Paul himself joined in, along with Allan to complete the ‘A’ Team.

The day was complete with a multi-prize raffle (guess who drew the tickets) and a wonderful range of refreshments, with the help of Margaret and Joan.

All involved were warmly thanked by Paul and one of our guests from Woodlands, while Roger as Chairman congratulated Paul himself for mounting such a memorable event.
