Blackburn & District Society of Magicians

The residents of Kingsway and their friends proved to be a most responsive audience for our September meeting, and this in turn brought out the best in the performers.

First up, creating an up-beat start to the show, was Adele – our most recent and youngest member who was presenting her first act before an audience.  She acquitted herself well, dancing on with an appearing wand and following up with her personalised version of the torn and restored newspaper.

Changing the mood to mental magic, Allan presented a ‘deja-vu’ effect before reprising the startling Houdini-inspired handcuff escape which he had revealed at a recent workshop. The effect on the audience was audible.

Craig had brought along his magically-trained ferret, which took part in a mini zig-zag illusion to the delight of those present.

Anil then introduced further variety with a sword-swallowing interlude (with a warning not to try it at home!), which had again been introduced at a workshop.  He also had a large box which inexplicably ‘gozinta’ a smaller one.

Paul was on top form with his magic box which alters to accompany his age as he tells of his magical journey through life, cards being continually reproduced but finally vanishing in a puzzling conclusion. He also had an amusing prediction sequence which involved a string of letters pegged onto a washing line, and a blindfold.

Donald the Average brought up the rear at his own request, as he promised to make a mess – which he proceeded to do.  He left the stage area littered with playing cards following a routine which was typically ‘Donald’.

I linked the acts with sight gags and other bits and pieces, including the reappearance of Baskerville the Hound by special request.

Carl and Caroline wove their own brand of magic in the kitchen, producing an array of edible goodies which soon did their own vanishing act, while Frankie turned her hand to the raffle.

It was, indeed, a team effort which was greatly appreciated, Alan Barnes from the church commenting: ‘I just want to say “thank you” for the Magic Show you presented at Kingsway.  I was in the following day, and several people told me how much they had enjoyed it.’
